Captain Marvel 2 will be set in the modern day, moving Carol Danvers from the 1990s setting of her debut solo outing. Captain Marvel, co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, told the origin story of Carol, an Air-Force pilot turned intergalactic warrior, whose memories were wiped by the same massive explosion that granted her cosmic powers.

Starring Brie Larson, the film served as an MCU prequel, showing the early S.H.I.E.L.D. years of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and teasing more adventures of the Tesseract. However, it also set up a lot of the future. Captain Marvel introduced Maria Rambeau, a friend of Danvers from their Air Force days and (perhaps more importantly) the mother of Monica Rambeau, as well as the Skrulls, a shape-shifting race of aliens portrayed as villains in the comics, who were shown to be a fairly benevolent race in the film.

In their report that Captain Marvel 2 is moving ahead with WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell, THR revealed that the sequel will be set in the “present day.” These are the only major plot details provided thus far, but could have big ramifications for the cosmic side of the MCU, not least that Captain Marvel 2 will be set after Avengers: Endgame.

The connection to WandaVision, however, is of particular note here, as it has already been revealed that series (which also place in the present day) will feature an adult Monica Rambeau in a supporting role. A modern-day Captain Marvel 2 would synch up perfectly with an of-age Monica Rambeau who (at that point) will be well-established with fans by the time the film hits theaters. In the comics, Rambeau became one of the superpowered figures to take up the Captain Marvel mantle (before Carol, in fact), which opens up interesting story directions.

There are also a few threads from the end of the first film that are intentionally left dangling, such as the Skrulls searching for a new home, and (as set up in Spider-Man: Far From Home) Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos back on Earth pretending to be Nick Fury. This leaves several doors open for McDonnell as she plots her sequel script, including a perfect lead-in to adapting the “Secret Invasion” storyline from the comics, in which a group of hostile Skrulls are revealed to have been on Earth secretly replacing many superheroes by shapeshifting to look and act exactly like the heroes they’ve replaced.

Marvel had no comment on the above revelations about Captain Marvel 2, which isn’t unusual for the typically tight-lipped studio. No official release date has been given for the film, but Disney has previously announced two potential dates for upcoming Marvel movies in 2022 falling on February 18th and November 5th so it’s a safe bet the movie will end up filling one of those slots.
