Samuel L. Jackson has hinted that Captain Marvel uses time travel in Avengers: Endgame. While there has been plenty of speculation that time travel might play some sort of role in in the upcoming film, this all but confirms it - assuming Jackson’s not trying to throw off diehard fans.
By the time Avengers: Endgame is released, audiences will have already witnessed Captain Marvel’s very first standalone film. Released a month before Endgame, but set over 20 years before the events of the film, to call Captain Marvel’s inclusion within the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline mysterious is an understatement. Even the film itself includes a non-linear story, proving yet again that time will play a unique role. Now, the significance of time may have been all but confirmed now that Jackson, who plays eventual S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury in Captain Marvel, has revealed one interesting tidbit about the titular hero.
In an interview with Total Film (via: ComicBook), Jackson highlighted one major advantage that Captain Marvel has over the other Avengers - that she can travel through time. Touching on the fact that her inclusion in the film might seem odd, given that her story takes place in mid ’90s, and yet Nick Fury reaches out to her via pager at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Jackson said:
Time travel has been a major talking point for Avengers: Endgame ever since Avengers: Infinity War was released. While time travel may not unfold quite as effortlessly as Superman flying around Earth in Superman: The Movie, it has seemed like one of the only legitimate methods of bringing back half of all the living things that perished at the end of the film. In fact, even the trailer for Avengers: Endgame is sprinkled with some hints that tie into the time travel theories - from Captain America’s suit to the title card.
“I guess we might figure out that she can do things that nobody else can do. She can time travel so maybe she can get ahead or behind or whatever, and figure out what all that is. The fact I have the pager 20 years later - it gets addressed in an interesting sort of way.”
For some, time travel might seem like the easy way out. It might even seem too simple. That said, it’s less about what tool the Avengers use to reverse the effects of Thanos’ snap than it is about how they use it. Joe and Anthony Russo have proven themselves to be creative assets within the MCU, so it’s unlikely they’ll drop the ball this far in. And, now that fans can pretty much assume that time travel will almost definitely play a role in Avengers: Endgame - as neither the Russo Brothers nor Kevin Feige will likely officially confirm it themselves until the film is released - it opens the door for even deeper speculation into how exactly it’ll play out in the film, as well as how this will affect past and future entries in the MCU.
