Captain Marvel’s Carol Danvers could have looked quite different, that is if one early costume design had made it into the MCU film. Captain Marvel, which starred Brie Larson as the title superhero, was released early this year as the first Marvel Studios film with a solo female headlining. Last year, Evangeline Lily’s Wasp made history when she co-led Ant-Man and The Wasp. Scarlett Johansson will join the club next year when she stars in the long-awaited Black Widow solo film. Captain Marvel was a commercial success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
The movie tells the origin story of Carol Danvers, a former fighter pilot for the U.S. Air Force who has lost her memories. At the start of Captain Marvel, she’s a member of the Kree military unit, Starforce, and unaware of the full extent of her superhero powers. However, once Carol realizes the Kree have been controlling her and inhibiting her powers via an implant, she removes it and causes them to flee. One of the higher up Kree officials she battles is Ronan the Accuser, who also appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Artist Constantine Sekeris, who worked on the Visual Development team for Captain Marvel, shared an early design idea for Carol Danvers’ costume in the film. The concept borrows from Ronan’s look, with a similar color and style of armor, especially in the shoulder area. The headpiece also has a similar aesthetic, with a red and black hood that looks close to the one Lee Pace wore as Ronan. Check out Sekeris’ photos of the early costume idea for Captain Marvel below:
Another look at early concept art for Captain Marvel’s costume was released earlier this year and showed what Carol’s Kree pilot suit might have looked like. However, many noted that particular look was inaccurate from the comics. Ironically, even Ronan himself almost had a different look in the film, with Captain Marvel Concept Artist Ian Joyner sharing an unused design for the character earlier this week. His design acknowledges that Ronan is younger during Captain Marvel than in Guardians of the Galaxy and gives his costume a slightly different vibe.
Artists frequently share early design ideas for superhero movies especially, since the process of making a costume for those is particularly daunting. There’s a strong possibility that a comic book character may wear the same or very similar design in multiple films. This means that it goes through many iterations before the final design is chosen. Even if the exact look an artist puts forth doesn’t make the final cut, as was the case with this Ronan-inspired design, it’s easy to see elements of it in Captain Marvel’s final costume.
