WARNING: Mild Captain Marvel spoilers.

-

Brie Larson and some actors who played Skrulls in Captain Marvel danced to Salt-N-Pepa’s song “Push It” in a behind the scenes video from set. Even though the song isn’t included on Captain Marvel’s official soundtrack, songs from the ’90s played a major role in the film.

The relationship between Carol Danvers (Larson) and the shape-shifting Skrulls is complicated in Captain Marvel. The film picks up in the middle of the Kree-Skrull War - with Carol fighting on the side of the latter - and their struggle continues throughout the course of the film. As Carol navigates LA in the mid ’90s after crash-landing on Earth, her journey is constantly at odds with the alien race - specifically with Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). However, before Carol ever makes it to Earth, she and some Skrull soldiers take part in a combative chase sequence aboard a Skrull ship; though some behind the scenes footage proves that tensions weren’t nearly as high on set as they were during the actual scene itself.

The Twitter page All Things Marvel posted a behind the scenes video featuring Larson dancing to “Push It” with a handful of actors playing Skrull soldiers. Larson is shoeless and has her hands bound as she dances, while another actor casually performs the floss dance. Check out the video below:

Even though “Push It” doesn’t show up on Captain Marvel’s soundtrack, there are still plenty of other songs in the film ripe for ’90s nostalgia. In fact, a different Salt-N-Pepa song is featured at one point during the movie - “Whatta Man.” Other songs featured in the film include everything from Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” to Garbage’s “Only Happy When It Rains.” In fact, some songs on the soundtrack play during pivotal sequences throughout the course of the film.

’90s references aside, Carol’s relationship with the Skrulls is captivating to say the least. Between her internal battle directly tied to the Kree race, her mysterious backstory, and the fact that some characters in Captain Marvel aren’t entirely who they appear to be - which is fitting, considering that shape-shifting plays an integral role in the film - the Skrulls add some unexpected weight to her origin story. That said, the mid-fight dance-off isn’t entirely unprecedented, especially when it comes to human characters-turned-cosmic warriors in Marvel films. Peter Quill did it in Guardians of the Galaxy, so why shouldn’t Carol Danvers get a shot?
